New Creative Direction for Susan Fiedler
New Creative Direction for Susan Fiedler
2010
Growing up in Toronto and Vancouver with an artist mother and a music-industry manager father, Susan says she learned early that creative expression and business smarts are complementary skills. In 1991, Susan founded Soul Flower – now one of the best known jewelry brands in Canada. In 2004 she was included in Business in Vancouver’s list of 40 Under 40 achievers in business. That same year Soul Flower partnered with the RBC Financial Group to create the Circle of Hope, raising over $30,000 dollars for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC-Yukon Chapter.
Susan’s charity efforts took a more personal turn a few years later, when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This confrontation with mortality caused her to re-evaluate the greater meaning of her work, and come up with a design that has become a powerful talisman for many whose lives have been touched by cancer. The F* Cancer bracelet sends a spirited message in an elegant and understated way, featuring the defiant phrase rendered in an elegant script.
In early 2010, Susan decided that it was again time to explore new possibilities. She has sold Soul Flower to the company’s long-time general manager, in order to focus her creative and business talents on projects with a social impact. The sale of the business has given her the opportunity to spend more time on her personal charity initiative F*Cancer Embrace Life. She is proud to have raised over $50,000 to date in support of the work of InspireHealth, an integrated cancer clinic in Vancouver.
Susan is excited about the future and the opportunity to work creatively with like-minded colleagues: mission-based businesses, social enterprises and ventures run by non-profits.
